*Written just before Poppie was born, and I’ve gone through and added reviews based on how we’re liking the items currently!*
There are SO many decisions to be made when expecting a child–some are major, and others require less thought. In my opinion, the products that will get us through Poppie’s beginning stages of life and make mom and dad’s life easier fall into a pretty important category, but with so many different varieties and brands, it can be hard to choose what’s best for your babe. I’ll be the first one to tell you practicality usually takes second place to aesthetic in my world, but with a newborn, I know functionality will be important. When we were making our registry, I took my love for pretty things, the need for functional items, and combined those to create our ideal list. I also took the time to research each item, with safety being top-priority, and took advice from other mamas on what worked for them. Now that Poppie has been here a few weeks, I’ve compiled a list of items we’re loving, in hopes that any new mamas may find it helpful in prepping for their sweet ones, too!
Baby Bjorn Bouncer Seat – I had several mamas say this was their lifeline during the first few months! We’ve only used it a few times, but P seems very content in it, which is great for popping her in while mom unloads the dishwasher or eats a meal! I love that it’s lightweight and I can tote it throughout the house easily.
Fridababy Baby Basics Kit – The nose Frida (snot sucker, yay!) came highly recommended, and I decided to take advantage of their other infant products for nail trimming, eliminating cradle cap, and easing baby gas in one handy kit. Their packaging is amazing and all 4 items fit in their travel case, making it easy to throw them in the diaper bag. Poppie’s little nose is still a bit small for the Nose Frida, but we are loving the other three products!
UPPAbaby Vista V2 Stroller and Mesa Carseat – This travel system lives up to the hype. My engineer husband was blown away with the features on both items, especially how easy the carseat is to install and check for security. My selling points on the stroller were the ability for it to stand on its own while folded, easy foot brake, giant basket underneath, and the option to add a rumble seat when, Lord willing, baby #2 comes along. I love that the carseat also snaps in without an added attachment, and the bassinet that comes with the stroller for baby’s first weeks. Also, it’s stinkin’ beautiful.
Halo SleepSack – These have been such a lifeline for us! The velcro makes it so easy to tuck P up like a little burrito and makes it virtually impossible for her to break out of during naps and at night.
Halo Swivel Bassinet – I love that this bassinet allows us to have Poppie as close as possible to our bed without her actually sleeping with us. It 360 swivels and has sides that are mesh for ventilation. Also comes with a nightlight feature, soothing sounds, and vibrations to soothe baby.
Infant Optics Baby Monitor/Camera – This was the hardest decision of the whole bunch. Reviews on cameras were such a mixed bag, but I ended up choosing this one because I read the camera was super clear, the battery lasted a long time, and it is not WiFi enabled, which was a plus in my book. After setting it up and playing around with the features, I’m really pleased with the quality–will keep you updated!
Boppy Nursing Pillow – My number one must-have! The Boppy is such a help when it comes to breastfeeding, but also just holding Poppie in general. It keeps tired arms from giving out and provides a nice cushion for baby to rest on. It also can be used for tummy time and as a floor prop when baby can sit on its own.
Ubbi Diaper Pail – My main requirement for the diaper pail: keeps. smells. out. This stainless steel pail has several features that seem to do just that! I also love that you can use regular kitchen trashbags, because those custom fitted ones can get pricey. Also: child-proof lock!
Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine – According to both sleep training methods I’ve researched (Moms on Call and Taking Cara Babies), a sound machine is crucial to allowing baby to get a good night’s sleep. This particular one is app-controlled, gives off soft light, and is programmable for a sleep schedule. I also love that it’s not an eyesore! Highly recommend.
Owlet Smart Sock – There has been much debate over this little sock, but it was an absolute must for us. (There’s no wrong answer in deciding what fits your baby and lifestyle!) The Owlet sock velcros around baby’s foot and monitors heart rate, oxygen levels, and sleep patterns, alerting you through a sensor (that we’ll keep on our nightstand) if something is off. It has been tested and proven to reduce SIDS and gives these new parents peace-of-mind while Poppie sleeps!
DockATot Baby Lounger – Another cult-favorite, the DockATot will be perfect for supervised naptime and a safe place to put baby when we need to go hands-free! P is still getting used to this, but it has been fantastic for when I need to set her down momentarily and know she’ll be safe–I even used it in the bathroom so Mommy could take a 5 minute shower and still keep an eye on her girl!
Fawn Design Diaper Bag – I wanted a diaper bag that didn’t LOOK like a diaper bag but still had all of the functionality of one. I love the pebbled faux leather and shape of this particular one, and also love that it’s a backpack style. It has so many pockets and compartments, and we also got the changing clutch to go with it, which includes a changing pad and wipes case in a stylish wristlet. Loving this bag!
Mamaroo Infant Seat – It may seem like we have lots of lounger seats (also have the cutest Nemo bouncer for when she’s a little older!) but each one serves a different purpose! The Mamaroo (I call it the spaceship) is an app-controlled rocker that mimics serveral different movements–car ride, ocean waves, etc–and plays sounds to keep baby occupied and calm during awake time or for supervised naps. For those nap-times where Poppie just can’t seem to stay down in her bassinet, the MamaRoo has been a God-send!
There are so many other items we got that we love and can’t wait to use! You can check out our full registry here. These items are the ones I researched most heavily and took care to compare brands and styles. At the end of the day, personal preference is king, but I hope these recommendations help point you in the right direction! I’ll be sure to update the list as we use more items and discover what Sweet P is loving!
Stay stylish and enjoy the hunt!
