If you follow any influencers or celebrities on social media, you’ve probably noticed the latest and most dramatic beauty trend everyone’s been trying. Mile-long lashes are popping up everywhere, and they’re not your typical falsies. Lash extensions are a relatively new, longer lasting alternative to those painstaking fake eyelashes we’ve been wearing for over 100 years. (Can you believe that?! Check out this article for a fun history!) While I have long eyelashes to begin with, sometimes you just want a little extra somethin’, and I’m all about hopping on a beauty bandwagon! I teamed up with local esthetician and friend, Alex Shaw, to find out what all the fuss is about and give lash extensions a try myself.
I first met up with Alex to check out her space, curate some photos, and really get a feel for the lash extension process and why it’s become so popular. Alex has been perfecting her process for about two years now, and has gone through intensive training to ensure that it is as seamless as possible. So what exactly are lash extensions, you ask? The answer is simple. They are single fibres that are individually bonded to your natural lashes using a medical-grade glue. Since they are attached to your actual lash, the extensions last the length of your natural lash life-cycle, which can be anywhere from 3-4 weeks–sometimes longer, depending on your care process.
I know the question on your mind: “But don’t lash extensions damage your natural lashes?” This was a concern of mine, as well, being that I’ve always taken pride in the length and thickness of my lashes. The answer, however, is simple. If you pick, pull, or frequently play with the extensions, you run a larger risk of pulling out your natural lash. Likewise, if you mistreat your lashes even when they’re “naked”, Alex suggests that you may not be a good candidate for lash extensions to begin with. Know your habits and be honest about them to avoid damaging those peepers!
Once you’ve determined whether lash extensions are for you, be sure to prep accordingly for your best experience. Arrive to your appointment with clean eyes, free of any traces of eye-makeup. From there, the process takes about 90 minutes, and Alex likes to throw in a “free nap” with each set of extensions. 😉 To begin, your lashes are wiped clean of any traces of dirt, dust, etc. To ensure that your bottom lashes stay out of the way, a surgical tape is placed along your lower lash line, holding them in place for the duration of the process. Then, each individual fibre is bonded to your lashes in the styling of your choice. Alex offers “natural”, “cat-eye”, and “dramatic” lash looks, and if you know me, my choice was “the longer, the better!”
After your lash process is complete, be sure to avoid getting them wet for 24 hours, and do not pick, play with, or tug on them.
Not only can I forgo mascara with these lashes on, I also feel like I can roll out of bed, wash my face, and not look scary! In all seriousness, these lashes make me feel like a queen! Check out this dramatic difference!
Alex is all about good vibes, and it shows! My entire lash experience was wonderful, and I can’t wait to continue the process! Stay tuned for my fill-in experience in a few weeks, and a lash lift to cap it all of in the future! In the meantime, head on over to Instagram and give @esthetician_alex a follow! She’ll be doing a lash giveaway when she hits 500 followers! In addition, if you’re interested in getting your lashes done, mention The Hunt for Style for $10 off your service!
I hope my awesome experience having my lash extensions done by Alex will encourage you to have yours done, too! Because while inner beauty is most important, a little extra “oomph” never hurts!
Until next time,
Stay stylish and enjoy the hunt!
